The CFR is a non-partisan organization that works to educate people on the foreign policy choices and issues facing the US and the globe. In June, the organization published an article on women and foreign policy in honor of World Refugee Day.

In 2016, the number of refugees worldwide hit 65.3 million, with 4.8 million of those coming from Syria. Over half of the Syrian refugees are women and children, and women face added challenges as refugees in terms of their physical and financial safety. Child marriage, which can lead to major health concerns and gender-based violence, has risen among Syrian refugees in recent years.

However, programs that focus on female refugees such as the Warvin Foundation for Women’s Issues and the Women for Women International program, can help them learn the skills to feed themselves and their children while connecting with other women going through similar situations. Supporting and promoting programs that promote the health, wellness, and capability of female refugees may be an important global policy prerogative in coming years.
